I posted this write up back in February but since Fashion Week is right around the corner, I decided to re-post it! Here are some fast facts about Mercedes Benz Fashion Week..
For those of you who dont know much about Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, here are some fast facts about this exciting time of year!
When was it founded?
The first NY Fashion Week happened in 1943 and was called Press Week. In 1994, Fern Mallis former Executive Director of 7th on 6th productions moved it to Bryant Park.
Why was it founded?
7th on 6th productions brought the show rooms of 7th avenue to 6th avenue in fashion show form allowing for an easier central location for press as well as buyers to cover designer collections.
Why do people refer to NYFW sometimes as the “tents”?
Both Bryant Park and Lincoln Center locations are empty areas that are created from the ground up! Taking roughly 2 to 3 weeks, tents are constructed that consist of The Theatre, The Studio, The Box and The Stage. Most of the shows are held here yet some are held across the plaza at Alice Tully Hall and Avery Fisher Hall; also apart of Lincoln Center. This mini city is heated and features portable bathrooms that look much like grounded toilets!
How long does it last?
Fashion Week happens twice a year in NYC in February and September for 7 days. It is one of four fashion weeks held around the world alongside London, Milan and Paris.
Who can attend?
Fashion week is an invite only affair. You have to be invited in order to attend.
